For the uninitiated, the National Folk Festival is a staple for The Ellis Collective. This was actually the birthplace of the band (although no one actually gave birth)(although some did subsequently) so its a pretty special weekend for us. We have spent the last few weeks putting together a live show that features some guest appearances from several other Canberra musical luminaries. Matty has also promised to be sober enough to stand and Spike has agreed not to speak while on stage. There alone is your assurance that this show will be ball-droppingly amazing…..

We will also be performing our cover of Leonard Cohen’s ‘Chelsea Hotel #2′ in their annual song contest. We are the perennial bridesmaids in this comp – always in the finals but never win the big prize. And what a prize it is. Absolutely nothing… so any support you can provide is most welcome.

We are also debuting our new merchandise – tattoos! Get one with any album purchase for free? sorry – that should have been an exclamation mark – for free!

Set Times:

FRI 6PM – COORONG – LEONARD COHEN

FRI 8PM – MAJESTIC

SAT 5PM – MAJIESTIC

SUN – 4PM – MAJESTIC

SUN – 12PM – SCRUMPY

To check out the rest of the program, head here – hopefully we will see you for some sweet sweet Coopers and Gozleme over the Easter weekend!

After the disappointment of Corinbank Festival being postponed due to ridiculous weather, the Gods smiled on us and gave us a good showing for our ridiculous Basketball Band Bash.

Just as background, I ran into the festival artistic director in the bus interchange and mentioned I had this vague idea that you could pit four Canberra bands in a 3 on 3 tournament somewhere in the city and make each band play after each game. It went from vague notion to reality very quickly and the trash talking quickly escalated to a youtube battle which culminated in a physical war that left us forever scarred…

These videos and photos are so f***ing hilarious we had to share….

IP belongs to Andi and George and Cas P…

The Riot Act summarised the trash talking and the event itself here and also here… Video of our first training session and You Are Here’s vidoes of the day are below. xxxooo

The wonderful Lucie Thorne has invited us along to play at her album launch. For the uninitiated you can read some industry opinions on Lucie’s new album below…

It will be a beautifully melancholic evening of music so it is most appropriate that the wonderful folks at the CMC will be running a bar to drown those sorrows in (and please, don’t go soft on me… the fact you have to work Monday isn’t the reason you shouldn’t drink - it should be the reason you have to).

It’s going to be wonderful evening. Guaranteed to be more winning than the Raiders and assuredly better the fuck than whatever you’ll find on TV.

www.theelliscollective.com
www.luciethorne.com

Hope to see you there.

$20/$15 at the door.

As promised – some reviews of Bonfires In Silver City’

*Album Of The Week on Radio National Breakfast 25-29 July 2011

“Bonfires In Silver City reveals a subtlety and craft that eclipses
Thorne’s prior work.”
Martin Jones, Rhythms Magazine, August 2011

“I’ve been listening to three great female artists in the last month;
the first two, Gillian Welch and Emmylou Harris require little
introduction to most, their bodies of work substantial, their standing
already verging on legendary. The third is a name lesser known,
but her album Bonfires in Silver City is undoubtedly the best of
all three. Lucie Thorne is one of our own, and with this album she
makes a firm statement that she is one of our finest. World-class.”
Chris Peken, Alternative Music Group

“Mitchell fans will sense a resonance of 1976’s Hejira,
for many her masterpiece, in Bonfires In Silver City….
the records are strikingly similar; poetic, introspective works
that have a solidity and wholeness.”
Ian Cuthbertson, The Australian, August 2011
